World Suicide prevention Day
Start the Conversation
10th September marked World Suicide Prevention Day, an important reminder of the difference that conversation, connection and simply taking the time to listen can make.
At St Martin of Tours, we understand that supporting mental health is about more than responding when someone is struggling. It’s also about creating environments where people feel safe, heard, valued and supported.
Sometimes the smallest actions can have a meaningful impact- checking in with someone, making time for a conversation, listening without judgement, or helping someone find the right support.
This year’s message, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide- Start the Conversation,” reminds us that open conversations can help challenge stigma and make it easier for people to speak about how they are feeling.
Today, and every day, let’s keep the conversation going. 💙

St Martins:
A World Suicide Prevention Day workshop was held at Oakwood House last week with five residents taking part. The session encouraged open conversations around suicide prevention, mental health, loss and emotional wellbeing.
Residents and staff shared personal experiences in a safe and supportive environment, including experiences of bereavement, suicidal thoughts and recovery. Residents said hearing staff speak openly helped them feel less alone and more comfortable approaching staff for support.
Staff reinforced the importance of seeking help and provided information and leaflets on available support. Stress balls were also provided to help residents manage stress and promote wellbeing.

The workshop created a warm, respectful and supportive atmosphere, with refreshments helping residents feel comfortable participating.
Following the positive response, Oakwood staff will be holding similar workshops regularly and work towards creating a dedicated safe-space area where residents can express their feelings and access support information.
Overall, the workshop highlighted the value of creating opportunities for open and supportive conversations about mental health and suicide prevention.
