The Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Psychological Well-Being
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the world, affecting not only physical health but also mental health. The pandemic had brought about unprecedented changes in our daily lives, including social distancing, lockdowns, and quarantines. These changes have had a significant impact on our psychological well-being.
Increased Stress and Anxiety
One of the most immediate effects of the pandemic has been an increase in stress and anxiety. The uncertainty and fear surrounding the virus, combined with the disruption of daily routines and social isolation, have led to increased levels of stress and anxiety for many people.
Depression
The pandemic has also led to an increase in depression. The loss of loved ones, financial difficulties, and social isolation have all contributed to feelings of sadness and hopelessness. In addition, the disruption of daily routines and the loss of social support have made it more difficult for people to cope with these feelings.
Substance Abuse
The pandemic has also led to an increase in substance abuse. The stress and anxiety caused by the pandemic have led some people to turn to drugs or alcohol as a way to cope. In addition, social isolation and boredom have also contributed to an increase in substance abuse.
During the pandemic, St Martins took proactive measures to ensure that staff and residents were given the utmost support with their mental health and provided resources to stay safe while being indoors.
- Space to talk for staff and residents through Teams meetings.
- Activity packs for residents to have an enjoyable time indoors.
- Providing more computers and phones for residents to contact their families and loved ones.
The pandemic had a lasting impact on St Martins in terms of health & safety, day-to-day operations, cleanliness & hygiene across all our services, more digital systems like computers & phones on-site for residents, work from home option for head office staff, reflective spaces for staff & residents and sick leave support for staff affected by COVID-19.
Conclusion
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on our psychological well-being and different workplaces. Businesses and organisations have an important role to play by reminding their staff and service users to take care of their mental health by seeking support from friends and family, engaging in self-care activities, and seeking professional help if needed.
